Ok, I would say buy a hardtail. It will be more affordable and better suited for street use. Check for Giant, Specialized, Ibex, GT, Trek and others. Ibex you will need to buy from the internet, but they offer a very good value.

But somehow, if it’s your first bike, maybe trying a bike is better. How the bike fits you is the most important thing, also that the bike is properly adjusted. These two things make buying a bike different from a general sports shop to a dedicated bike shop.

Which model to buy will depend on your budget. You can probably buy a Specialized Hardrock Sport at $400, or a Specialized Carbon Stumjumper FSR at nearly $7,000.

I like the Giant ones, are affordable and the suspension can be used in mountain and in the city

Without knowing your price range, I will go on the basis that you are looking for an "entry level" bike. If I were you I would research the components groups that shimano make. Here is a good link :

Another great place for research is http://www.mbtr.com. There you can look up just about every model made and read customer reviews.

Personally, I do most of my riding training for triathlons. But I do own a DBR hardtail that I bought based on the components. So, my best advice is to base your purchase off the component group and not the name brand of the bicycle. Why pay more because of the name on the frame when the component group is the same.

I would say that any brand that you see at your nearby bicycle shops should be very good. Many of those do not cost a lot either. BTW, don’t write off Schwinn completely, they have a big line of bikes for the bike shops. That line is really good. Even I was surprised after what Schwinn had been through.

The first thing you should consider is what percentage of road as opposed to street riding your doing sounds to me like your going to be doing predominantly road riding in that case my suggestion is to buy a hybrid, they are far more efficient and still suitable for light duty off-road use Devinci, Norco and Specialized are all good brands if you want quality plan on spending around $600 minimum whether its mountain or hybrid .
